atonement

15km bike ride before work

now, this little jaunt, which includes the deceptively killer andy bay cemetery hill, used to take me an hour and half or so

but

today i cranked it out in 50 minutes

such is the motivation of stacking on 7 kg in 6 weeks without being full of newly created life
(despite alana at work trying her best to start that little rumour at work, ce n'est pas vrai, mes amis - stop taking the bait, colleagues!)

and ptssccchhhhh to the lean mean road biking machine who cruised past me, halfway up the hill and laughed at me because they heard me muttering a combination of religious incantations and blisteringly profane epithets

yeah. pttsscchhhhhhhhhhhh

ok

it should feel wrong

but

it feels so right

and i have to confess that aside from watching "17 again" in it's entirety tonight, i also spent a good fifteen minutes rewatching this scene

and

i have to say

atonement

oopsie
been so long i almost forgot how to spell 'atonement'
lately i've been spelling it 'do lots of lying around, and be eating at the same time'

but today (which is actually yesterday now):

30 min practising bunny hops, jumps and wheelies on my awesome bike in the driveway (because i'm super mature and sophisticated)

and also

15km bike incorporating the hill beside the andy bay cemetery

yay for chirsty!

yay for her!

pavement of the moment (potm)

when i was of the ages 14 - 17 i estimate i spent at least half of my aliveness being grounded

and grounded in my house meant
no going anywhere
no friends over to visit
and
extremely limited phone privileges

it's not that i was a very bad kid - i was not

i really wasn't

probably i was an unhappy kid who made some questionable choices ( i know, i know - who would have thought i'd grow up to be....oh, hang on...) and was punished in an unreasonably strict manner

other kids from the 'hood will attest to this strictness - my dad was the long arm of the law their parents called in to break up gatherings, parties, shindigs and the odd riot

and all the boys were afeared of him

so that is why one summer when i was fifteen and i was grounded for the entire school holidays bar ONE WEEK i was able to get a remarkable tan in the skibo st backyard and become well aquainted with
'gone with the wind'
'the godfather'
AND
'roots'

lolcat of the day

so this is happening on at least two levels at the moment
one is the bigger picture and feels so very good
(macroignoring)
and one might just be me cutting off my nose to spite my face
(microignoring)
so i might go and make some amends
because there's sunday fun to be had

you can never quarantine the past

oh me, oh my

i remember discovering this cover a few years ago, when it was first recorded and i was sooooooooooooooooo excited

it's the perfect (sound forever) blend of pavement and dunedin music, and thus the most apt musical representation of the 1990s and my late teens/early twenties

i can't help but feel that if i drink the right amount of alcohol, the right song is playing, i'm wearing the right clothes and i run directly at the stage when pavement are playing in auckland on march 1st, i'll be transported directly back to about 1992

but

only if the lightning strikes the town clock at the same time, of course

and

only if there's an important plot point dependent upon my time travel

obviously

kiss me into the past

i feel old - because look how young these guys look

surely you can see me, all 18 years old and shiny and pure, wearing my doc boots and paisley minidress in the crowd at sammy's - half my life ago (HALF!!)

my friend riki and i were on 'in focus' in 1993 too, because we used to do the schools show on radio 1 quite regularly

pavement came to new zealand to follow their favourite dunedin bands, much like my friend jim

the 3ds are supporting pavement in auckland on march 1. it's going to be wall to wall indie rock royalty

don't you love bob nastanovich's so-cal accent? listen to him say "copenhagen", "boat" and "own" - you'll swoon

totally

lolcat of the day

i am very heartily sick of the sickness
it's very tedious sounding like stevie from 'malcolm in the middle'
and
accessory muscle overuse when breathing is tiring
so
tonight the decision has been made to say
goodbye
to the february triathlon dream

lolcat of the day

i know how that white cat feels
this chirst has nearly asploded from too many noms
and now it's too hot
and i am too cranky
pttsschhhh

what ben said

"so this is the new year
and i don't feel any different
the clanking of crystal
explosions off in the distance (in the distance)

so this is the new year
and I have no resolutions
for self assigned penance
for problems with easy solutions

so everybody put your best suit or dress on
let's make believe that we are wealthy for just this once
lighting firecrackers off on the front lawn
as thirty dialogues bleed into one

i wish the world was flat like the old days
then i could travel just by folding a map
no more airplanes or speedtrains or freeways
there'd be no distance that could hold us back

there'd be no distance that could hold us back
there'd be no distance that could hold us back

so this is the new year
so this is the new year
so this is the new year
so this is the new year"
